Groups and Standings
AFRICA:
The 12 group winners and 8 best runners-up will advance to Round Three. The 20 teams will then be grouped into 5 round-robin, home-and-away groups of 4 Teams. 53 teams, 5+1 places
After a preliminary round in October/November 2007, 48 teams have been drawn into 12 groups for the second stage. The 12 group winners and the eight best runner-ups will proceed to the third stage.
ASIA:
43 teams, 4.5 places
After three preliminary rounds, ten Asian teams are currently playing the fourth round which consists of two groups of five teams. The two stage Four group winners and the two group runners-up qualify for the South Africa. The third placed teams from each group will play one home-and-away play-off with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation play-off with the top team from Oceania.
EUROPE:
53 teams, 13 places
The European qualifiers get underway in August 2008 after UEFA EURO 2008, with 53 teams playing in 9 groups on a home and away basis.
NORTH AMERICA, CENTRAL AMERICA, and CARIBBEAN:
35 teams, 3.5 places
The qualifying competition started in February 2008 with two knock-out stages. The 12 Round Two winners will contest Round Three, which consists of three round-robin, home-and-away groups of four teams.
OCEANIA:
10 teams, 0.5 places
The global qualification race is underway and progress has already been made along the road to 2010 South Africa following a preliminary tournament at the Pacific Games in Samoa. Of the nine countries who competed alongside the host nation, three advance to the next stage where they join with New Zealand in the OFC Nations Cup in a series of two-legged matches.
Those going through are the tournament winners New Caledonia and the team they beat in the final, Fiji. Also taking part are bronze-medal winners Vanuatu.
The winners and runners-up in the OFC Nations Cup then compete over two legs, with the victor advancing to a play-off against the AFC's fifth-placed team.
SOUTH AMERICA:
The top 4 teams qualify for the FIFA World Cup™. The 5th placed team enters a home-and-away playoff with the 4th placed team from North,Central America & Caribbean.
